Castell d'Olerdola

Olèrdola Castle Olèrdola was founded by the Count of Sunyer around the year 929. Throughout the 10th century, at the time of Christian and Muslim conflict, the castle played an important role in the defense and control of the frontier zone, being damaged in 1108 during the invasion of the Almoravides.

The first pre-Romanesque style church was consecrated in 935 and dedicated to the warrior Archangel Saint Michael and to Saint Peter. The new Romanesque church was built in 992 beside the previous one. The castle itself, built onto a Roman watchtower, is a spacious single-nave building typically medieval. Halfway through the 11th century, the castle took on a particular protagonism when Mir Geribert declared himself Prince of Olèrdola and came into confrontation with the count of Barcelona, Berengue Ramon I.

With the shifting of Christian frontier to the south at the beginning of the 12th century and the pacification of the territory, the population gradually moved away to the plains, nearer the vineyards, water supply and communication routes. Today, the Olèrdola castle remains still stand surrounded by the vineyards in the heart of the Cava region.
