In 1984 Annie and James established The Millton Vineyard and winery on the banks of the Te Arai River near Manutuke, on the East Coast of New Zealand in the wine appellation of Gisborne.
Originally Annie’s father, Mr John Clark, had developed vineyards on his estate at “Opou” in Manutuke during the late 1960’s.
Millton Vineyards is a pioneer in New Zealand’s wine industry, proudly established as the country’s first organic Vineyard and winery, achieving organic certification in 1989. Then in 1990 receiving Demeter certification.
Our ethos is simple but profound: respect the land, nurture the vines, and let the wine express its origin. Each bottle of Millton wine is a testament to the power of nature, showcasing the purity, elegance, and depth that only organic and Bio dynamic viticulture can deliver. This involves growing the grapes without the use of herbicide, insecticide, systemic fungicides or soluble fertilisers, as well as adherence to the rhythms of nature; the earth, sun, moon and beyond…All of the vineyards are dry farmed without the use of any supplementary irrigation. All our grapes are hand-picked, processed at the winery then all wines are bottles on the property.
Over the years, Millton Vineyards has grown from an idea into a globally respected brand, exporting our wines to over a dozen countries. Recognition was rapidly achieved by winning numerous trophies and gold medals, locally and international.
